| Conference - 2008 Review
The 1Spatial Conference 2008 started with an INSPIRE seminar and workshop as a precursor, which attracted a larger-than-expected audience and was very well received. Those who attended the event were given a comprehensive introduction to the INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) Directive, including it’s potential business impact on stakeholders, from Robin Waters, Chair of the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) Action Working Group for INSPIRE.
Rob Walker, Independent Consultant and 2008 Chair of AGI, who is also a Member of AGI Action Working Group for INSPIRE, followed up the seminar with an interactive workshop. He picked up on the data quality themes from Robin’s seminar and challenged delegates to produce examples of clearly articulated metadata content statements relating to well-known industry datasets. The workshop also highlighted and explained the draft Implementing Rules for Metadata (which have now been approved by the INSPIRE Committee members) and how metadata issues can be addressed by organisations responsible for datasets affected by INSPIRE.
The annual 1Spatial Golf Masters also took place in advance of the Conference, providing players with an informal opportunity to relax and network in advance of the main event.
On the eve of the Conference, representatives of 1Spatial’s international partner network, the 1Spatial Community, met to share joint success stories, re-establish contact with each other and make new acquaintances. Steven Ramage from 1Spatial highlighted collaboration opportunities around current and planned market developments and provided partners with an insight into the Conference.
On the first day of the 1Spatial Conference 2008, over 200 delegates from around the World arrived at the Radisson SAS Hotel at Stansted Airport. They were greeted by a comprehensive exhibition featuring some of the leading organisations from the IT industry and the geospatial sector, such as Autodesk, HP, Informatica, Tele Atlas and Oracle. After the opening and welcome address by Graham Stickler, the Conference Chair, the first day began in earnest with a keynote speech from the European Commission’s Joint Research Council on data consistency considerations relating to the INSPIRE Directive. The Spatial Data Infrastructure theme was continued in presentations from EuroGeographics and Land and Property Services Northern Ireland. Other presentations on day one included Oracle, Transport for London and Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council, and the day also featured a DNF (Digital National Framework) Masterclass and Expert Group Meeting.
The proceedings of the first day gave way to an evening of entertainment featuring agility, adventure and excitement. A drinks reception held in the Radisson’s world famous Wine Tower Bar and was graced by angels, Wine Angels to be precise, who proved their agility by frolicking in the air while guests looked on from below. A sumptuous three-course gala dinner followed, featuring great food, good conversation and frequent updates on the Champions League semi-final football match between Chelsea and Liverpool!
The after-dinner entertainment came in the form of leading explorer Monty Halls, who had taken time out from filming in the extreme west coast of Scotland to tell us of his adventures around the World and under the sea. Monty and his inspirational speech were very well received and he mingled with guests as the night continued and the 1Spatial casino got into full swing. Excitement was high as guests competed at poker, blackjack, craps and roulette into the early hours of the following day.
The final day welcomed additional delegates to the Conference and began with keynote speeches from Tele Atlas and the Land Registry of England and Wales. The day then split into several industry-specific tracks, namely Public Sector, Utilities, 3D and Convergence, Data Providers and Data Security, providing a broad range of interest points for our diverse audience. These tracks ran alongside a selection of 1Spatial product workshops that gave delegates the opportunity to engage directly with Product Managers and other interested delegates and resulted in some great feedback and discussions around geospatial data integration and quality control.
The Conference drew to a close with a presentation from the OSGeo (Open Source Geospatial Foundation), followed by 1Spatial’s CEO Mike Sanderson who thanked delegates and staff alike and hailed the end of another very successful Conference. He closed by looking forward to next year’s Conference, hoping everyone would be back and reminding them “it’s about the data, stupid”.
