| PSMA Australia - Dan Paull An NSDI Implementation in Australia to achieve Integration, Harmonisation and Delivery of National Geospatial Data
Abstract:
Being a federation, Australia has some natural hurdles to pass for any nationwide projects. At the State level, Australia has, for a long time, had a world-class spatial data infrastructure. The aggregation to a National level first occurred with a collaborative initiative that led to the formation of PSMA Australia Limited – a government-owned public company with the role of building, maintaining and delivering national geospatial datasets.
There are many factors contributing the development of the Spatial Industry and the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). The increase in Land Based Services (LBS) and spatial awareness is driving the demand for easy consumable spatial data.
The development of an NSDI looks to focus on the delivery of spatial data and attributed services in a virtual environment, with a Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) to facilitate value added services and an increased level of vertical integration both on the supplier and consumer sides.
In 2006 PSMA Australia released the LYNX data infrastructure – a step towards automating the complex supply chain that they manage. LYNX provides an interface for all stakeholders to contribute and access, from data suppliers to PSMA Australia’s customers.
The next step in the LYNX evolution sees the development of an environment that resembles the descriptions of a physical implementation of a NSDI in Australia by providing:
- Increased update times with the longer term capability of near real-time transactional updates,
- SOA platform to facilitate development and orchestration of services for near real-time data integration processes; and
- Increased levels of vertical integration both on supplier and consumer side through seamless integration of the supply chain with stakeholder data management environments.
