LINZ

National Mapping agenciesLand Information New Zealand (LINZ) is the National Mapping Organisation responsible for providing up-to-date topographic mapping (digital mapping data and hard copy land maps at 1:50,000 scale) to support the needs of Defence, Emergency Services, and the constitutional framework. LINZ topographic maps are available to the public through bookshops, outdoor stores and information centres. They cover all of New Zealand, offshore islands, some Pacific Islands and the Ross Sea Region.

A 1Spatial customised version of LAMPS2 (LINZFRAME) has been deployed at LINZ since 1995.  The customisations provide functionality that is specific to LINZ map production and includes: intelligent display methods, process methods for the generation of text labels and a tool for creating contour labels.  LINZ currently uses the system to hold the NZTopo database of 1:50,000 scale mapping data.  The database is maintained through work undertaken by mapping contractors, while maps are produced by contractors using tiles extracted from the database.

LINZ has the new objective to develop and print a new NZTM based NZTopo50 (1:50,000) scale map series which meets New Zealand’s core topographic requirements, meets primary customer needs, and contributes to Government's outcomes of ensuring that New Zealand is safe and secure, and has a growing, inclusive and innovative economy. 1Spatial is currently undertaking a programme of enhancements that are designed to eliminate much of the map production work currently undertaken by contract.  The printing of NZTopo50 maps will continue to be outsourced.  The results of the current project are a precursor to ensuring that this aim can be achieved.

LINZ will set a date for the release of the new 1:50,000 scale national map series in 2007.  Publication of the new national map series is likely to be early in 2009. In order to achieve this objective they require a number of modifications and new developments to be made to their existing map production flowline. 1Spatial is currently developing a number of enhancements to the existing flowline, principally regarding the cartographic representation of features that will assist LINZ in getting closer to their stated goal.  The new flowline will enable LINZ to meet their publishing objectives and substantially streamline the map production process.
