| 3D Topology
Aim: The vision of the 3D topology project was to research and produce a working implementation of a 3D topology storage model based on ISO 19107. The aim was to develop both the model and a set of spatial operators, and examine the potential performance improvements obtainable in using a topological model to underpin the operators as opposed to pure geometrical methods.
Approach: 1Spatial implemented this model making use of Oracle Spatial, and a bespoke rendering tool was developed to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of the operators.
Partner: The project was performed in conjunction and as a sub-contractor of Laser-Scan Inc under the US Small Business Innovation Research Program.
Results: Synthetic ‘city’ 3D data was produced in the lifetime of the project as well as the import of real-world data of the city of New York produced by EarthData. The generation of the topology is currently a batch process and no ‘on-the-fly’ topology structuring takes place. This is a planned deliverable from a future project.
