Research and Development1Spatial has a long history of involvement in research & development. We have been involved with OGC, Esprit, NGA, US Army TEC, and in addition support PhD research programs into areas that relate directly to spatial data quality.

We are committed to a very active involvement in research; our focus is on spatial data quality. Re-use and re-purposing are required for successful use of data contained in on-line registries; we are keen to continue developing automated tools to machine process the data to make it fit for purpose. These tools need to be delivered in open IT architectures.

We maintain a strong academic programme around our Radius software products; our current research interests are:

  • Topology:
    for maintaining spatial data quality.
  • Master Data Management:
    as part of the supply chain for spatial data and the creation of Spatial Data Infrastructures.
  • SWRL/OWL:
    as tools to define rules and ontologies.
  • ISO19138:
    methodologies for establishing measures of data quality

We are currently undertaking research projects with:

  • 3D Topology - to research and produce a working implementation of a 3D topology storage model based on ISO 19107
  • Babel - investigating the foundations to enable 1Spatial technology to access web-based geographic systems
  • NERVE - 1Spatial is contributing to research into the use of spatial information in the Emergency Services for first response and the aggregation of data across the geospatial data supply chain. We are also working with AIMTech in this area, read story.
  • VISTA - The VISTA project is examining novel ways of integrating, presenting and utilising utility data with the aim of reducing the direct and indirect costs of streetworks.
