Business Rules Definition
In all organisations there are rules that govern business processes. In the geospatial arena these can relate to the nature of the data and how it is reused internally and by customers - content structure and attributes. Example rules can be as simple as “check that roads do not overlap water features”. These simple examples are clearly deficient and can be extended to be more meaningful, such as “check that roads do not overlap water features unless the road feature is attributed as a ‘bridge’ ”. Or have very complex rules like “Fire stations should be inside a building of type ‘Fire Station’ and be within 200 metres of a street that has the same street name as specified in the fire station address”.
Typically business rules are stored in people’s heads, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents or UML models. In order to make full and better use of this knowledge this information can be stored in a rules repository.
