A to Z of 1Spatial Solutions:
Address Data Management
In certain sectors, such as Emergency Services many facilities that are important in emergency responses do not have addresses that conform to postal standards. There are no standards or dictionary terms to support gazetteer extensions. This means that such address-based databases are error prone and their maintenance is time consuming. Even worse the data cannot be exchanged successfully with other emergency services and the response may be directed to the wrong location. Using the data integration environment provided by 1Spatial organisations can tackle incomplete or inaccurate data. As an example, if you are working in a Police Force you may be struggling to publish accurate crime statistics that make use of location, we can help. If you are looking for data quality improvements in matching address data with mapping data then read on.

Basic Land and Property Units (BLPUs)
Municipalities worldwide seek to make their data available through portals and other interoperable services. Since they are managing data that change rapidly, a framework for linking that data to the real world (where the change actually takes place) is required. This framework in Great Britain is based on creating an entity known as a Basic Land and Property Unit (BLPU). This is created from detailed topographic objects from the Ordnance Survey data sets. This is a time consuming process and has to be repeated quarterly as the changes from the Ordnance Survey arrive. 1Spatial provides an automated process, which has the benefit of reducing the time to create and maintain BLPUs. 90% of BLPU polygons can be created automatically, resulting in significant time and cost savings for Local Government organisations.

Cartographic Generalisation
Cartographic generalisation has been a major research topic for over 20 years in Europe. The information normally caught by the expert eye of a cartographer or surveyor is captured as a set of rules, which are the basis of deriving smaller scale maps or geodata products from more detailed existing source data. Cartographic generalisation is the stage that deals with correct symbolisation, placement or exaggeration of the cartographic objects and the labels on the map. Introducing model generalisation as a pre-process results in simplification as well as harmonisation of the data, i.e. it ensures data quality and uniformity.
Generalisation allows products to be automatically produced from a single database and massively reduces the amount of effort that would be required manually. It allows organisations to maintain a single master dataset at a large scale and to propagate edits through all smaller scale data products.
1Spatial has been a market leader in generalisation technologies for many years and is further developing its generalisation capabilities to meet the emerging requirements for deriving geodata at multiple scales from master reference data.

Field Survey Data Capture
In our experience data models are not complex enough or well enough defined to support what the data capture users require. As a result field data applications have rudimentary error checking. This means that very often the data validation or quality checking comes much later on in the data management process. This causes expensive reworking, long after the operator has left the scene. We advocate data validation taking place in real-time at the point of capture or data source. Our data provider customers ranging from Ireland to Malaysia have used this solution. Tackling data model complexity and also efficient memory management are two ways we address optimised field data capture.

Incident Responses
Many of our solutions support the need to aggregate or integrate geospatial data from many different sources and ensure or maintain the integrity of master data or base reference mapping. This is particularly true with incident responses since timing is essential to tackle incidents in a timely fashion. 1Spatial offers a data integration platform that can help you to automatically address some of these data management challenges and respond effectively.

Model Generalisation
The difficult task of deriving smaller scale maps or geodata products from more detailed existing source is known as generalisation. Producing digital data at different scales is time consuming. Using computer software algorithms releases personnel to work on higher value tasks and increases the frequency of product update releases. 1Spatial has been involved in one of the largest European generalisation projects in the last 20 years working with the AdV, the working committee that coordinates the official surveying for the 16 federal state survey offices in Germany. As a result of that work and other projects with organisations, such as KMS Denmark, IGN Belgium, IGN France and Ordnance Survey Great Britain, we have developed solutions to automatically generate data from one scale to another while maintaining data integrity. The scale change is performed by model generalisation and is done completely at the data model level without taking into account map display or representation.
A part of the project at AdV and a common generalisation requirement is to make time and cost savings as well as enable data owners to release more frequent updates of their products, often also to be achieved by automating the process. The process of updating their products is also done from a single master dataset. Given the wide range of algorithms available in the 1Spatial generalisation suite, other organisations have used this same environment for data volume reduction, for example shape point reduction for digital mapping data to enable it to fit onto small devices like personal digital assistants (PDAs).

Photogrammetric Integration
Photogrammetric integration solutions from 1Spatial enable data to be captured and directly submitted into the repository dataset, avoiding the data loss and degradation that is typically associated with traditional file transfer techniques. This kind of capture and submission also means that all attributes and object-to-object relationships are immediately populated at the time of analysis, which immediately highlights any operator errors and prevents invalid data being captured. We offer a range of products and services for photogrammetric integration using our proprietary geospatial processing technology.
Any organisation that has to capture and update mapping or geospatial datasets, such as national mapping agencies or commercial data providers can benefit from this solution.

Spatial Data Conformance Checking
When creating a new product or updating an existing product or system that relies on geospatial data, organisations need to be able to validate quickly and effectively the integrity of the data being used. 1Spatial offers this facility both as licensed software or as a service. The benefit of these validation services is, that organisations can base decisions on business rules relating to the data. Our approach is to store the business rules, for example data specifications in Excel spreadsheets and check the level of conformance of the data against the business rules. This will provide a quantitative assessment of data conformance and can be fed into enterprise dashboards or data monitoring programme to continuously assess, fix and improve geospatial data.
